Guarantees of Origin (GO) document the origin and characteristics of a specific quantity of energy. They ensure that renewable energy is clearly identifiable and traceable.
HKNs represent the environmental value of a quantity of energy – and thus make it tradable. This environmental value is separate from the physical product: it can be traded regardless of where and how the energy physically flows.
In this way, HKNs ensure transparency in the energy market and make it possible to demonstrate and communicate sustainability in a targeted manner.

Swiss HKNs certify that the energy source was produced in Switzerland and that at least 80% of the raw materials used originate from Switzerland. They are particularly relevant where cantonal regulations or support schemes require Swiss origin.
