Emissions from fuels stagnate at a high level

16 July 2019

The proportion of biogenic fuels continues to rise sharply.

Due to the growing volume of traffic (more kilometres driven) and the increase in emission-intensive passenger cars, CO2 emissions from fuels stagnated at the previous year's level, 3.3% above 1990 emissions. The fact that emissions have not risen further is mainly due to the increasing use of biogenic fuels and the growing share of electromobility in road traffic. The share of biogenic fuels in total fuel consumption was 3.5 per cent in 2018, an increase of over 36 per cent compared to 2017 (share of 2.6 per cent). Importers of fossil fuels must offset part of the CO2 emissions from fuels with emission reductions within Switzerland. The proportion will be increased to 10 per cent in 2020. The blending of biogenic fuels can be counted as an offsetting measure.
