The two-day Swiss Hydrogen Summit at the Dolder Grand in Zurich offered a comprehensive insight into the hydrogen economy in Switzerland. The new hydrogen strategy has set an important course, even if there are still unanswered questions. Switzerland's connection to the European hydrogen network is particularly crucial for the industry. European Hydrogen Backbone.
Daniela Decurtins from VSG emphasised that renewable molecules must play a key role in the future energy supply: "If we have learnt anything from the geopolitical developments and the energy crisis, it is that renewable molecules are needed alongside renewable electrons in order to achieve a secure, economical, diversified and climate-neutral energy supply." In addition to hydrogen, this also includes bio- and synthetic methane as well as liquid renewable energy sources such as bioethanol, biodiesel, HVO and e-fuels.
Power-to-X technologies, whether in the form of power-to-gas or power-to-liquid, will play a central role in the defossilisation of the transport sector. Around six million combustion and hybrid vehicles are currently still in use in Switzerland. However, the production of power-to-X fuels is likely to take place in sunny countries such as Spain and Portugal, as renewable electricity is less attractive in Switzerland - a point also emphasised by Synhelion AG.
Biofuels Switzerland was actively represented at the summit. Managing Director Martin Joss showed how renewable fuels can contribute to defossilisation and which political and economic framework conditions would accelerate the transition to Power-to-X. "With clear political recognition and reliable framework conditions for Power-to-X products, an attractive market can emerge that enables investment and drives innovation." emphasised Joss. This is essential in order to ramp up production and meet the future increase in demand - particularly in air transport from 2035.
